Student COVID-19 Study

Inclusion Criteria

  • Adult U-M Student age 18 years and older
  • Possession of a smartphone (Android, iOS)
  • Ability to understand and demonstrate willingness to remotely sign a written informed consent

Study Summary

  • Study duration is the academic school year. Participants will wear one non-invasive device (info about Fitbit below) and see real-time data on their smartphone
  • Participants will answer a total of 4 surveys on the smartphone through the Roadmap 2.0 app (info below)
  • Participants will collect nasal swabs and saliva samples at home using a simple collection kit the study team provides
  • At the end of the study period, there will be a final interview over the phone/zoom and participants can keep their Fitbit device

Roadmap 2.0 App

  • Positive Activities: 8 positive activities to be used as much or as little as would like
  • Daily Mood recorded under the graphs tab in the app
  • Step/Sleep: stored in the graphs tab of the app. The information is transmitted from the Fitbit App (connecting Fitbit to the app will be done in the onboarding session)
  • Surveys: Surveys will be pushed daily to the app and populate at the top of the home screen

Social Rhythms App

  • Collects data from either HealthKit or Fitbit (health, sleep, and activity data). These data will be used to generate a report to participants about their circadian rhythm. A report will be sent to the participant through the app after a few days. Participants can submit their data and obtain a report as frequently or little as they would like
  • The report gives information on
    • Activity pattern: How your body’s time clock has shifted due to the pandemic
    • Regularity: Has your schedule become more or less regular during COVID-19
    • Shift: Has your internal clock shifted to become earlier or later
    • Sleep time: What time does your body start preparing for sleep
    • Avoid light: What time should you begin to avoid bright light to avoid delaying your clock
    • Light exposure: What time can exposure to light help you stay on track

Fitbit Charge 3 and Fitbit App

  • Fitbit Charge 3: The Fitbit Charge 3 is a smart watch capable of measuring heart rate, exercise amount, and sleep levels. The smart watch can be worn on either wrist to give accurate measurements
  • Fitbit App: Data collected from the Fitbit Watch will be stored in the Fitbit app and transmitted to display in the Roadmap 2.0 application under the graphs tab
